The Endothelial Cell Biology group investigates the function of the endothelium/endocardium during cardiac development and how deficient endocardial-to-myocardial signalling contributes to the onset and progression of heart disease, using high-resolution imaging, physiological real-time assays and multi-omics. Additionally, the lab has identified numerous artery-specific proteins with unknown functions within the cardiovascular system. Using both mouse and zebrafish models, as well as in vitro assays, we aim to decipher the role of these proteins in vascular development and disease, with a primary focus on arterial thrombosis. To enhance the translational value of our research, we are currently testing several of our hypotheses in patient-derived samples and plasma biopsies. Together, our studies will not only shed more light on the molecular mechanisms that drive cardiovascular development and disease, but they may also identify potential novel therapeutic targets to further reduce the burden of cardiac and arterial disorders.
