Research Focus and Main research questions
The aim of our cardiovascular research is to gain new insight into the physiological regulation of blood pressure and into pathophysiological mechanisms leading to arterial hypertension. Renal function, hormones, the vascular system, the central nervous system, the heart as well as the immune system affect the complex regulation of blood pressure. A better understanding of this regulation may help to develop novel causal therapeutic options for the treatment of arterial hypertension and the prevention of cardiovascular disease.
Our current projects focus on the influence of the innate and acquired immune system, the development of hypertensive end organ damage, the role of specific vascular ion transporters for regulation of the peripheral resistance and the effects of salt restriction and salt depletion on water- and electrolyte homeostasis. Furthermore, we focus on how the perinatal period might influence the risk for the development of hypertension in later life.
